What is Rehab?
Rehab, also known as residential rehabilitation, is a drug or alcohol treatment programme that is attended on an inpatient basis. Patients will join rehab for a number of weeks or even months, and sleep at the treatment centre, receiving round-the-clock support for their addiction.
Addiction is a multi-faceted illness and the recovery process should involve a person-centred approach, covering in-depth assessments, medical detoxification, targeted psychotherapy, holistic therapies, fitness training, diet and aftercare. This level of care, under one roof and one team of staff, is accessible in a residential rehab.
The prospect of going to rehab may feel daunting to people struggling with addiction and mental health issues, and many people delay rehab treatment even when they really need it. In reality, rehab is a place of safety, offering an intensive and focused space where you are supported by a team of experienced healthcare professionals, away from the triggers and stressors of the home environment. The alternative to residential rehab is outpatient treatment, where you will need to travel to your outpatient centre to collect medication or take part in a therapy session. These programmes are less intensive but are usually more flexible.1,2

Who is Residential Rehab For?
Residential rehab is especially beneficial for people who need a medically managed detoxification from alcohol or drugs with a period of intensive therapy to prevent relapse. Rehabs for drug and alcohol addiction provide the highest level of care within one facility, so that the patient doesn’t need to travel between different centres to attend sessions.
Addiction rehab provides a safe haven for both the individual and their loved ones to begin that process of recovery. Many people suffering from addiction, from all walks of life, benefit from the unique setting at inpatient rehab offers:
- Individuals with mild substance abuse issues, to more severe cases of dependency and poly-substance abuse that require specialist medical treatment in the form of detoxification and an intensive residential rehab programme.
- People suffering from co-occurring mental health conditions such as depression, trauma and anxiety, which often compound or exasperate the addiction symptoms.4
- Those with complicated family dynamics, with both the patient and their family members needing space to process the what has been happening in their lives.5
- Those with a history of relapse, some of whom have been to other centres and struggled to maintain sobriety.
Benefits of Choosing Residential Rehab
Regardless of whether your home environment is a family home, a flat share, solo living – being away from temptations and stressors in the home environment is a key benefit of residential rehabilitation for addiction3. For four weeks or more you can put your problems and responsibilities to one side, and take the time you need to focus on your own recovery.
For many this is a turning point in their lives, where they can finally leave behind destructive behavioural patterns and move forward armed with what many of the Castle Craig therapists describe as a ‘toolkit’ of therapeutic skills for life.
“Stayed at Castle Craig during a very difficult time in my life in early 2023. The care & therapy I received there has definitely changed the direction of my life. After 20 years of addiction, Castle Craig has taught me how to live a life free from the negatives that i was used to. I would recommend Castle Craig for anyone suffering with addiction issues to any substance.”

How Do I Know Which Residential Rehab Centre Is Right for Me?
There are a number of rehabilitation centres in the UK of varying levels of quality and with different programme models. Begin by looking at what you want to get out of treatment. For example, if you need detoxification from a drug like benzodiazepines which require medical management, so you should look for a rehab with specialist medical detox and 24/7 medical staffing. If you struggle with a mental health condition such as psychosis, trauma or anxiety disorder, or a physical health condition such as chronic liver disease, you will need a rehab clinic that is led by a Consultant Psychiatrist and can quickly respond to any medical or psychiatric complications.
What are the questions I need to ask to to choose the right rehab?
Write a check-list of questions to ask the admissions teams at the rehabs you are interested in. Some good questions to ask are:
- Do you have a Consultant Psychiatrist?
- What experience and qualifications do your therapists have?
- What will I do during the day?
- How many sessions of one-to-one therapy do I get each week?
- Are all costs included or are there extra charges?
- Is there an aftercare programme?
- Do you provide a family programme?
- What are your success rates?
- What were your inspection results?
- How do I reach your clinic?
- How can I pay?
Residential Treatment With CATCH Recovery
What separates CATCH Recovery from other outpatient addiction clinics is that we can offer a full chain of care for the whole patient journey – from assessments, to intervention, to integrated round-the-clock care in our private rehab clinics and aftercare at home.

Partner Rehabs
At our sister rehabs, Castle Craig and Smarmore Castle, our staff has specialist expertise in long and complex alcohol and drug detoxification and we have medical staff on duty around the clock to ensure your safety. Our doctors and nurses work in teams together with psychologists and therapists to provide you with high-quality care.
Customised treatment
We are of the opinion that there is no universal solution to problems with addiction and addiction. Each patient is unique and therefore needs their own, tailored treatment program where we map your unique needs and match them with different treatment interventions based on your individual conditions. In our concept, everyone pays the same price regardless of how much healthcare or detoxification the patient needs.
Treatment around the clock in a peaceful environment
Our two treatment centers are both located in castles in extensive private grounds. You can have the chance to completely focus on your treatment in large and beautiful surroundings with privately owned forest and gardens that guarantee you privacy, inspiration and tranquility during your recovery. Our patients appreciate the opportunity to get away for a while from their home environment and instead receive their treatment in an idyllic, relaxing environment that offers the best possible care and discretion.
Structured Daily Activities
When you come to a treatment centre, you usually begin a program that lasts 4-12 weeks. The environment with us should feel comfortable and allow you to focus on your well-being and recovery without distractions or triggers and negative influences. You will participate in a range of activities, including group therapy sessions, individual counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, trauma therapy, family therapy, 12 Step groups and readings, educational lectures and workshops, and holistic therapies.
Every admission is reviewed by the Medical Director or Consultant Psychiatrist.
Assistance with Inpatient Referrals
We understand the importance of choosing the right treatment facility. To assist individuals in finding the best care, we offer help with inpatient referrals to our partner facilities. Our team is dedicated to ensuring that each person receives an admissions assessment and that their case is reviewed by the Medical Directors of each clinic. By facilitating these referrals, we aim to make the transition into residential rehab as smooth and supportive as possible.
What Happens After Rehab?
Patients who come through our service for residential rehab can come back to us for our continuing care programme to help prevent relapse.
