Do I Need Help? The Signs and Symptoms of Alcoholism

Before deciding if online therapy is right for you, it’s important to understand alcoholism itself.

Alcoholism is a disorder marked by a persistent urge to drink to change your mood, despite harmful consequences. Its signs and symptoms vary based on factors like your health, personal history, co-occurring conditions, and drinking habits. Some symptoms may be obvious, while others are harder to recognise – especially if you’re managing daily life as a so-called “functioning alcoholic.”

Regardless of how it appears, alcoholism is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition.

Behavioural Symptoms of Alcoholism

  • Being secretive about drinking
  • Lying about drinking or how much you are drinking
  • Drinking heavily or binge drinking
  • Minimising your behaviour around alcohol when challenged by others
  • Drinking on your own
  • Drinking at inappropriate times such as first thing in the morning
  • Withdrawal from your friends and family
  • Avoiding your everyday responsibilities
  • Absenteeism from work or school/university
  • Losing interest in your hobbies or activities that were once a source of joy and pleasure

Physical Symptoms of Alcoholism

  • Needing to drink increasingly higher amounts of alcohol to achieve the desired effect
  • Excessive sweating
  • Unexplained tiredness
  • Headaches
  • Changes in your appetite and by extension changes in your weight
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Inability to care for yourself physically – appearance and health
  • Experiencing symptoms of alcohol withdrawal syndrome due to the cessation of drinking for a period of time

Am I an Alcoholic?

One of the most challenging aspects of addiction is denial – alcoholism is an illness that convinces you it isn’t there. Many people with alcohol problems don’t fully realise the extent of their struggle until it has progressed. If you’re starting to question your relationship with alcohol, there are helpful tools that can provide clarity.

CAGE Questionnaire

Healthcare professionals often use the CAGE questionnaire as a simple and effective screening tool for alcohol problems. Answering “yes” to two or more of the following questions may indicate an issue with alcohol, and could benefit from an online therapy programme.

Would you like me to include the CAGE questions directly beneath this?

  1. Have you ever felt you should Cut down on your drinking?
  2. Have people Annoyed you by criticising your drinking?
  3. Have you ever felt bad or Guilty about your drinking?
  4. Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover (Eye opener)?

When Should You Seek Help for Alcohol Addiction?

The simple answer is now. Alcohol addiction is a medical condition that requires treatment, not something you have to face alone. If you feel concerned about your drinking, think you should cut down, or notice alcohol is negatively affecting your life, it’s time to seek professional support.

Asking for help might feel daunting, but remember: struggling with alcohol doesn’t make you weak or a bad person. Alcoholism is not a moral failing – it’s an illness that can be managed and overcome with the right support.

With CATCH Recovery’s online therapy, accessing high-quality treatment has never been easier, no matter where you are.

Our team of addiction specialists is here to make the recovery journey feel less overwhelming. Contact us anytime for a confidential, relaxed conversation.

What Is Online Therapy? Can It Help Me With My Alcohol Problem?

Online therapy for alcohol misuse, also referred to as ‘online rehab’, is an alternative to in-person treatments, whilst still receiving the same type and quality of care.

At CATCH Recovery we will collaborate with you to create a bespoke online therapy programme that works around your needs and schedule. Our alcohol addiction treatment methods are delivered by an expert team of addiction therapists, who specialise in a variety of recovery techniques.

In the absence of a physical environment in which to recover, the CATCH Recovery team will tailor its approach to help you find sobriety, provide a high degree of personal attention, educate you on the nature of the illness, and help you to build a life free from addiction.

How Does Online Therapy Differ From Inpatient and Outpatient Treatment?

As experienced addiction professionals, we know that structure is effective when it comes to helping you overcome the psychological aspects of addiction, avoiding relapse, and continuing a stable life after rehab. What this structure looks like will depend on your specific needs. This might mean attending inpatient rehab at one of our sister clinics Castle Craig or Smarmore Castle, or outpatient treatment at CATCH Recovery. Our online therapy for alcoholism programme is part of our outpatient offering.

Outpatient Treatment for Alcohol Abuse

If you can’t commit to a residential stay in rehab due to personal or professional commitments, outpatient treatment at CATCH Recovery may suit you. Our programme works well if you have a strong support network and don’t require round-the-clock care that inpatient options provide.

Outpatient treatments are characterised by individual counselling and support groups, and you may attend once a week or several times per week depending on your needs.

Is Online Therapy Effective for Treating Alcoholism?

Yes – research shows that online therapy can be just as effective as in-person counselling for treating alcohol addiction. It’s important to remember that the success of any treatment programme depends on your active participation and ongoing commitment to protecting your sobriety.

Individualised treatment plans are created following an assessment, and will include:

  • Learning to cope more effectively with life’s ups and downs.
