Online therapy has become an increasingly popular choice for people as it is so convenient and accessible. But what exactly is online therapy and how does it compare to more traditional face-to-face therapy?
What is Online Therapy?
Online therapy is exactly how it sounds – therapy delivered remotely, using technology, instead of while sitting in a room with a therapist. 1 All you need to participate in online therapy is a quiet room, a good wifi connection and a device with a camera and microphone.
Online therapy delivery methods include:

Video conferencing
Live sessions using secure platforms such as Zoom, Skype, or specialised telehealth software, where you can see and speak to your therapist live on screen.

Phone Calls
Talking to a therapist over the phone.

Therapeutic Benefits of Online Therapy
There are many benefits for clients using online counselling. Research suggests that the remote physical distance between client and therapist in online therapy can create a sense of safety, which enables people to speak more openly and freely than they would do in person. 2
Advantages of online therapy include:
Accessibility: online therapy removes any geographical constraints, making it more accessible to people who live in remote areas or who have mobility issues.
Convenience: it allows you to schedule sessions more flexibly so that you can attend at a time and location that suits you best. It also removes the travel time needed to get to and from therapy sessions, meaning therapy can be fitted more easily into busy lifestyles.
Privacy: some people feel more comfortable accessing therapy online as doing so can feel more private. This sense of increased confidentiality and anonymity can help reduce feelings of stigma, and encourage more people to reach out for help.
Wider selection of therapists: without the need to travel, clients may have access to a broader range of therapists, including specialists who might not be available locally. This helps to ensure they can find the best match.
Continuity of care: clients can maintain regular therapy sessions even if away from home or moving areas.
Cost-effectiveness: online sessions are sometimes more affordable than face-to-face therapy, as therapists may not need to hire an office space – and of course clients do not need to pay travel costs either.
How Effective is Online Therapy for Addiction?
Online therapy for addiction has shown promising results in many cases, particularly for those with mild to moderate substance use disorders. 3
However, it may not be suitable for those with severe addiction or those requiring medical detoxification, for which we would provide a referral to an inpatient clinic. The effectiveness of online therapy often depends on the person’s commitment, the therapist’s skill in using online platforms, and the specific needs of the client.
Preparing For Online Therapy Sessions

There are various things you’ll need to bear in mind before starting online therapy.
-
A suitable device
If the session is to be held over video link, then obviously you’ll need a suitable device such as a laptop, computer, or smartphone. You’ll need to check the device’s microphone and camera are working properly, and that it has enough battery power to last the whole session.
-
An appropriate space
You’ll need a comfortable and private place so that you can speak freely without being overheard. The signal will need to be steady so that you don’t lose connection during sessions. Your therapist will advise on what to do should the connection fail during your session.
-
Positioning your device
You’ll need to put your device in a stable position so that you can look easily at the screen without having to move about. Take time to adjust your seating and camera position to find what works best for you.
-
Before and After Your Session
Without the need to travel, it’s important to allow some time and space both before and after your therapy session, so factor this in when scheduling your diary. Going for a walk or attending your therapy session from a different room can help to create some mental and physical separation.
Is Online Therapy Suitable For Everyone?
While online therapy can be extremely helpful for many people, it may not be the right format for everyone.
- Some people may find it challenging to establish and maintain a therapeutic rapport via a screen, and this can impact the effectiveness of the therapy. In these cases, it might be better for the client and therapist to meet in person.
- It can be harder for therapists working remotely to read body language and other non-verbal cues. As a result, there tends to be more focus on words and facial expressions.
- Some people may need intensive treatment or more support than online therapy can provide. For example, in a crisis situation, it can be more difficult for therapists to provide immediate and effective support online compared to in-person settings.
- If a person’s home environment is particularly noisy, distracting, or lacking in privacy, it can be difficult to fully engage in sessions. Living with a lot of other people can make online therapy difficult, as it can be hard to find privacy.

How We Deliver Online Therapy Sessions
We use a range of methods to deliver online sessions, enabling us to work with you remotely anywhere in the UK or abroad. Our online therapy sessions can be accessed on a mobile or desktop computer using Zoom, or via a phone call if that works best for you.
Your relationship with your therapist is one of the most important factors for successful counselling, and this remains the case whether you talk remotely or in person. 4

Online Sessions With Your CATCH Therapist
At the start of treatment you will set goals and develop an action plan with your dedicated therapist, and this action plan will form the foundations of your remote therapeutic care. We want you to feel secure and calm during your online counselling session and to be honest about your experiences, feelings and thoughts to get the most out of them. It may be helpful to think about any topics you would like to discuss or any questions you may have for your therapist.
The Goals
Just as face-to-face counselling helps to address the root causes of addiction, the primary goals of our online services do the same.
Developing Coping Strategies
We work with you to develop alternative coping strategies for managing difficult emotions or feelings.
Mental Health Support
Often addiction and mental health difficulties go hand in hand. Treating both concurrently can be the best approach for long-term recovery.
Supporting the Family Unit
Family members will have a chance to talk about how the addiction has impacted them, and to discuss the route forwards.
Managing Cravings
We use a variety of approaches to help you reduce or manage cravings, such as mindfulness-based cognitive behavioural therapy (MBCT).
Relapse Prevention Strategies
We work with you to identify triggers and stressors which contribute to your drinking, drug use, or compulsive behaviours.
Maintaining your Recovery
Post-treatment care is an integral part of our intensive programmes here at CATCH Recovery. Following your first appointment, you will be offered various services and recommendations to complement your online treatment and long-term recovery plan.
These may include:
- Drug screening – to track the progress of your recovery
- Sober coaching – to help you stay on track with your life goals.
Your Wellbeing is Safe With Us
With over 40 years of experience in treating addiction, CATCH Recovery – part of the Castle Health Group – is a trusted support service for anyone struggling with drug use, alcohol, or compulsive behaviours. We understand just how difficult it is to make that initial contact, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with us via Livechat, or send us an email if that feels more appropriate.
